Leggings as pants? Pippa says yes!

    Neil Mockford / FilmMagic

Pippa Middleton takes a walk on Nov. 15 in South Kensington, London, wearing her leggings as pants.

    By Rachel Elbaum

You love your leggings. And who doesn’t? As comfortable as pajamas, they're guaranteed to stick around for a while. But while some consider them little more than thick tights, others, like Pippa Middleton, treat them like pants.

We already know Pippa has the body to pull off nearly any fashion trend. At her sister’s wedding in April, Pippa’s bum nearly stole the show, thanks to a curve-hugging gown, and earned her the nickname “Her Royal Hottness.” Once again this week, Kate's newly single sibling put that famous bottom into full view, venturing out in a short green jacket with her leggings and ankle boots.

But are they too snug to wear on their own? It's a bona fide fashion controversy with its own Facebook group, “Leggings are NOT pants,” with nearly 400,000 likes.

Can leggings be worn as pants?

“I am so sick of all of the people who walk around with their full behind showing thinking it is okay because they have leggings on. I am here to say it is NOT okay and that you should go get some pants,” writes the group’s creator.

Still, there are some who don't think leggings' double duty is such a stretch. “This look is down to embracing your personality,” says Maria Bonet, a stylist in London. “I don’t think it should be dictated by being a size 2 and five-foot-ten.”

What do think of wearing leggings as pants? Is this a fashion do, or a major don’t?

The braid is back! Learn how to get the look for less

US Weekly's Jill Martin demonstrates how to do braids, a trendy yet classic hairstyle that has made a comeback.

By Jenna Goldate, from John Barrett Salon

Want to braid hair like a salon stylist in the comfort of your own home? It'll take some work, but you'll get the hang of it! Just practice on a friend or in the mirror as you follow these steps:

    • Section bangs and the front inch or so of your hair to the side by brushing it forward or putting it in a small elastic band.
    • Take the remaining hair and section it into about three ponytails, either up and down your head for a full-head look, or across from ear to ear for a lower look.
    • Braid those individual ponytails and secure with elastics.
    • Pin the braided ponytails flat to your head with bobby pins and tuck the ends in under other braids so you can't see where they begin and end.
    • Style your bangs and braid those front sections back. Pin them in with the others. Don't forget to tuck the ends in!

It should take only a few minutes, but it'll look like you've spent hours French-braiding your hair.

Here are some more tips for a great home-braiding session:

    • Are you planning to keep your braid in for a few days? Start with clean, dry hair and braid your look the day before you really want to showcase it. Braids are like leftovers - best on day two!
    • Need your braid today? Start with hair washed yesterday. Braid your look and be sure to pin any frizzies or stray pieces down with bobby pins, hair pins and your favorite medium-hold hair spray.
    • Braids are a perfect way to get a deep condition with no fuss! Work a styling masque, like John Barrett Be Healed (from the salon I represent), or one of Shu Uemura essential oils, like Essence Absolue, into each section of hair while braiding. Keep your braid in over the weekend and voila!
    • To keep your braids going strong, wrap your hair in a silk scarf or piece of fabric before bed. When you wake up, lightly spritz water over your braids, then pat with a clean towel. That should combat any stray hairs or frizzies.

    Will 'divorce rings' catch on?

Spritzer and Furman "Divorce Ring" / 1stdibs.com

    By Chiara Atik

Imagine: a man bent on one knee, gazing up into the eyes of a teary-eyed woman. He takes out a velvet jewelry box, opens it, and she gasps. Inside is a diamond ring in the shape of a broken heart.

    "Darling... will you divorce me?"

This backwards scenario may not be as implausible as you think: Alice Kwartler Antiques is now selling an 18-karat gold and diamond "divorce ring", complete with a solitaire and jagged broken heart. At $3,200, the ring might cost more than many people's wedding bands, but rather than a symbol of eternal love and commitment, this one's a symbol of "things didn't quite work out."

Using rings as a symbol of marital status can be traced back to ancient times, long before anything other than "death doing you part" was an option. In the modern era, there are three marital statuses: single, married, and divorced. If the whole thing started with a ring, why shouldn't it end with one?

The divorce ring certainly seems like it would be effective in acting as a quick visual clue to let friends and acquaintances know a marriage ended, thus saving a divorced woman the burden of having to laboriously inform everyone she knows. And those who go through particularly painful or drawn-out divorces might use the ring as a sort of "This is what you're in for" alert to potential suitors: "Yes, I'm single, but I might come with baggage."

    Divorce rings: smart or silly?

Still, others might opt to purchase a similar ring for themselves as a symbol of conquering heartbreak. In the Kwartler ring, for example, the diamond is bursting through the broken heart, as if casting off a shell or cocoon. This same spirit of starting over again is what prompts some women to throw divorce parties, or go on "divorcemoons". There's obviously some sort of need for women to reclaim these rituals in the wake of a marriage gone bad, or maybe in an effort to "retrace their steps" backwards to return to singledom.  [via]

    Paper eyelashes: Cool or creepy?

    paperselfstore.com

Blink and you still won't miss them: PAPERSELF eyelashes come in an array of designs, including horses, clowns and more.

    By Rina Raphael

    Their eyes were watching mod?

Mascara  has some new competition: dramatic paper eyelashes, the latest out-there beauty trend. The cosmetic add-ons are far more artistic than their drugstore cousins – inspired by China’s unique papercrafts, they feature symbolic Chinese designs such as horses, peacocks and butterflies. These origami falsies certainly don’t come cheap: Sephora sells the popular PAPERSELF lashes,  described as “jewelry for the eyes,” for $17.

On Tuesday’s TODAY, co-hosts Kathie Lee and Hoda witnessed the accessory on a colleague, and the reactions were less than enthusiastic. “Those look ridiculous,” said Hoda. “Look at them!” Kathie Lee, meanwhile, took umbrage with the practicality of it all: “You’d never wear them to church!” she exclaimed.

In the end, it was decided that such an innovative trend was best left to Halloween. Kudos, however, if you're brave enough to pull them off without beforehand. Just be careful during the application process – we don't envy the paper cuts with those...

This Fall, take a bow - in style

Tied up in a bow: Emma Stone attends the "Friends with Benefits" premiere.

    By Rina Raphael

"Some dresses, like if it has a big bow... are too old-ladyish on me," said Katie Holmes in this month's InStyle magazine. "If I can wear it when I'm 80 I'm going to wait."

While Mrs. Cruise might think bows are best left to Suri or Helen Mirren (both equally chic), she should possibly reconsider: Both dramatic and demure bows have looped their way into everything, from dresses to sashes to hair clips. The girlish, playful accent graced Fall 2010 runways, including Armani Privé and Christian Dior, and even captured celebrities style, such as Emma Stone and Zoe Saldana.

With so many cute and affordable options next season, it's an easy way to add some bold, feminine flair to your wardrobe. Why wait till your 80?

Snappy comeback? Suspenders are now in, as modeled on Evan Rachel Wood and Jenna Elfman.

    By Rina Raphael

Larry King may have hung up his talk-show suspenders, but the dorky-cool accessory has clipped its way back into style.

The boyish fashion statement has made a comeback in recent months – gracing everything from the Chloe 2011 runway to the J.Crew catalog– and has been spotted on such celebrities as Cameron Diaz, Evan Rachel Wood and Jenna Elfman.  It’s the latest addition to the ever-growing geek-chic market (Big nerdy glasses and fanny packs? “This is the new thing - suspenders are back,” exclaimed TODAY's Hoda Kotb on Tuesday, after watching two interns model the trend on-air. “I think they’re cute.”

Tie-dyed hair: Retro fab or bad?

    laurenxconrad.tumblr.com

Trendsetter? Lauren Conrad recentlu debuted her new colorful locks,

    By Rina Raphael

The iconic ‘70s tie-dye trend is back – but not where you’d expect it: your hair.

The rainbow-colored fad once graced hippie T-shirts, but it’s now been resurrected by fashionistas. Reality-TV star Lauren Conrad revealed her sherbet-hued locks on her blog, while celebrities like Nicki Minaj sported a horizontal take on the ‘do in recent weeks as well.

While the reception has been mixed (feedback has ranged from Twitter fans claiming to be “in total love” with the look to The Daily Mail proclaiming it “the worst look of the past 50 years”), there’s no doubt it’s struck a chord within the style community. It shouldn’t be a surprise, seeing as that this summer embraced colorful hair-additions, including the slightly controversial feather hair-extension trend, which has quickly emptied out fisherman shops.
