Did Princess Felipa of Bavaria copy Duchess Kate?

    Reuters file, EPA

Strikingly similiar? Duchess Kate waving at the wedding of the decade; Princess Felipa of Bavaria, at her less publicized May 12 wedding in Germany.

    By Rina Raphael

It’s been a year since Duchess Kate launched many a bridal trend with her elegant, Sarah Burton-designed gown. Since then, there have been numerous knockoffs and homages — including now, it seems, Princess Felipa of Bavaria.

The lesser known Bavarian princess, daughter of Prince Leopold and Princess Ursula, married a commoner (another big royal trend!), film producer Christian Dienst, on Saturday in Steingaden, Germany. Felipa, 31, wore a sparkly tiara and a modest, long-sleeve lace gown — created by Munich designer Natascha Müllerschön — that looks rather similar to Kate’s, no?

Someone made a funny: Pastor Monsignore Kirchmeier greets the bride, Princess Felipa of Bavaria, and her father, Prince Leopold of Bavaria, prior to the marriage ceremony.

    Ursula Dueren / EPA

Princess Felipa of Bavaria and Christian Dienst smile after the marriage ceremony. About 500 guests reportedly attended (smaller than a U.K. royal wedding, but still a lot of fascinators in attendance).

The newly married royal couple kiss (with no grumpy, hearing-sensitive flower girl to taint the moment).

Oh for pity's sake (article writer, not my esteemed co-commenters). There have been lace covered bodices and lace sleeves on wedding dresses since time began. Ok. I have no proof of that. But at LEAST since the 50's. It would be sad if no one else could wear them now that Kate has worn one. Sad inde …

Get the look: Duchess Kate's lace dress

    /

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge made a splash in Ottawa last June when she stepped off the plane with her husband, William, in a navy, lace dress by Canadian designer Erdem.

    By Rachel Elbaum

All eyes were on Duchess Kate this weekend as she celebrated her first wedding anniversary. After a busy few days of public engagements in London, the duchess attended a friend’s wedding over the weekend.

Stepping out in very wet weather, she wore a navy-colored lace dress by Canadian designer Erdem. It wasn't the first time she wore this designer number: it’s the same outfit she wore last summer during her tour of Canada. This time around, she accessorized the dress with a gold buckle belt, navy shoes and a navy fascinator.

Lace is all the rage this season, and it’s easy enough to dress this trend any way you like. If you don’t have $2,850 to spend on the original, check out these more affordable versions.

Duchess Kate's year of fashion hits

TODAY fashion contributor Zanna Roberts Rassi takes a look back at the Duchess of Cambridge's fashion hits in her first year of matrimony.

    By Rachel Elbaum

Duchess Kate is a designer’s dream come true. After all, how many people can make an outfit sell out only hours after appearing in it in public?

Yet the duchess does it time and time again. Her penchant for affordable fashion – or "high street brands," as they are known in the U.K. – only makes her more admired by women around the world, many of whom would give their favorite frock for just an ounce of her glamour.

"Kate represents a dream for so many women," Gabriele Hackworthy, fashion director at Harper's Bazaar UK told TODAY.com. "She was an ordinary girl who became a princess, and if she can wear a Reiss dress that costs 60 pounds (about $97) and you can also buy a Reiss dress for 60 pounds, then you're buying into that dream."

    Getty Images

Wherever she goes, Kate makes a fashion statement. Shoes, jeans, jackets - from fancy to downright casual, they all sell out quickly.

Kate's favorite designers remain mum when it comes to revealing how she's changed their world, with Orla Kiely merely telling TODAY.com that she’s “thrilled” that the duchess has chosen to wear her dresses. Erdem Moralioglu, the Canadian designer who created the blue lace dress Kate wore on her Canada tour, was similarly reserved, saying that it was “an enormous compliment” that she chose his designs.

Here's a look back at some of Kate's most popular styles of the last year – outfits that sold out within minutes, shoes that helped propel small businesses, and dresses that inspired imitation.

    Meeting the president

    Toby Melville / AFP/Getty Images

This photo of Kate wearing a Reiss dress to welcome first lady Michelle Obama to London has helped propel the brand's sales to a new level this year.

What exactly does one wear to meet the president? If Kate had any trouble deciding, it sure didn’t show.

Just hours after the world’s hottest newlyweds met the Obamas, Kate’s nude bandage dress by Reiss sold out, and the high demand crashed the brand’s website. After Reiss restocked the dress, it quickly sold out again. (It’s still available on the Reiss site under the name Lola, and is now marked down to $220.)

This wasn’t the first time Kate made an appearance in Reiss; she wore a cream Reiss dress in her formal engagement photo that the brand quickly re-released.

"There is no question that Kate choosing to wear Reiss has impacted our brand," a Reiss spokesman told TODAY.com. "We have noticed a significant increase in terms of brand interest and awareness globally, strengthening existing markets and attracting attention in markets we are yet to enter."

This year, sales went up 15.9 percent, according to the company. That's no mean feat for what was once a small British brand.

In the meantime, Banana Republic has gotten in on the action and come out with an eerily similar dress.

    Nude heels

L.K. Bennett's nude "Sledge" platform heels served the duchess well on her trip to Canada where she was often pictured in them.

Nude shoes were all the rage last summer, thanks in part to the duchess, who was pictured over and over in the L.K. Bennett “Sledge.” And she wasn’t the only royal to sport the look: Her new cousin Princess Beatrice wore them to cousin Zara’s wedding, while Kate’s mother and sister were also seen out and about in nude heels.

L.K. Bennett, which just opened a new flagship store in New York, won’t reveal how many pairs it’s sold since Kate’s become its most famous fan, merely saying that she’s “a great ambassador for Britain.” But judging by the difficulty many shoppers had getting their hands on these shoes, we can be sure the numbers are sky high.

Part of the brand’s signature collection, the “Sledge” is still available on its website, as are black wedges similar to those that Kate wore on the days before and after her wedding.

    Valentine's Day treat

    Phil Noble / AFP/Getty Images

Hobb's website found itself quickly overloaded after the Duchess of Cambridge wore its chestnut coat on a visit to Liverpool.

It took only a few short hours for Hobbs’ knee-length “Unlimited Celeste Flared Coat” to sell out when Kate visited Liverpool. The duchess’s appearance in the chestnut-colored cloak certainly helped make the brand’s Valentine’s Day, and Hobb’s quickly ordered new stock to help fill the demand.

If you didn’t get a chance to buy it then and there, it’s now on sale for $293.

    A day on the court

    Getty Images

She may have been there to watch tennis, but all eyes were on Kate when she attended Wimbledon in this white Temperley dress last June.

Forget the players on the court - all eyes at Wimbledon last spring were on the new duchess. The white, three-tiered Temperley dress she wore in the royals box sold out fast, despite its high price tag of $1,200.

Kate’s a big fan of Temperley, and has appeared in her designs several times, most notably on the night before her 30th birthday, when she wore a floor-length black lace dress to the premiere of “War Horse.”

Despite the designer prices on these duds, Kate’s not one to turn her nose up at a bargain. She was recently spotted at the Bicester Village designer outlet center, home to outlet stores of some of her favorite designers, including Temperley, Alexander McQueen and Ralph Lauren outlets.

Loyal fashionista: Duchess Kate wore L.K. Bennett's Davina dress in teal with the matching Jude jacket for the first day of the Queen's Jubilee celebrations on March 8.

    1940s icon
Peplums are all the rage this season, and Kate certainly got in on the action for her trip to Leicester. Wearing a dress and jacket by L.K. Bennett, Kate looked like a 1940s movie star as she accompanied the queen and Prince Phillip to kick off their Diamond Jubilee tour.

Although she reportedly picked up her ensemble at a second-hand store, it is now available again on the L.K. Bennett website. And thanks in part to her help as a walking advertisement for its shoes and clothing, the company reported that online sales are growing 100 percent a year, according to the Financial Times.

The Duchess of Cambridge chose a short Zara number for a charity concert at London's Royal Albert Hall. It wasn't the first time we've seen the jacket, though; Kate also wore it when she left Buckingham Palace the day after her wedding.

Zara certainly wasn’t complaining in December when Kate showed up at a charity concert wearing their short black-and-white lace overlay dress. Although it was already sold out on the site, pants in the same pattern were available - at least until eager shoppers snapped them all up.

    Comfortable style

    Pool / Reuters

Even a duchess loves a good pair of comfortable jeans. On a visit to London's new Olympic Park in March, Kate was so comfortable in these coral pants that she wore them in a quick game of hockey.

While fancy dresses and high heels are definitely staples in the duchess's closet, she has made no secret of her love for jeans, often appearing in the same pair over and over. Her casual style has helped make the monarchy more accessible, even if during a private visit to an art therapy charity it did disappoint one little girl who remarked, "She doesn’t look like a princess. Where’s her dress?"

In March, Kate brightened up London's Olympic stadium wearing coral skinny jeans paired with a navy jacket and Team GB scarf, although that outfit got far less attention than the grey sweatshirt she wore to show off her hockey skills. After the appearance, discount supermarket ASDA reported an 88 percent rise in the sales of its coral jeans on its website.

Duchess Kate's favorite brand lands a New York City store

    Behold, the duchess effect!

London-based retailer L.K. Bennett, relatively unknown in the U.S. before last year, is opening a New York outpost at the Time Warner Center on Friday – thanks to attention from Duchess Kate.

The royal, an increasingly influential style icon, has worn the mid-priced label on numerous occasions, everywhere from Buckingham Palace (remember those black patent espadrilles, nicknamed “The Kate,” from the day after her wedding?) to Canada to most recently, an official Diamond Jubilee outing with Queen Elizabeth (that lovely, 1940s-inspired teal  dress and peplum jacket).

    WireImage, L.K. Bennett

The Duchess Of Cambridge, wearing L.K. Bennett's Sledge heels, during her North American royal visit in Calgary, Canada.

Her most treasured L.K. Bennett piece seems to be a 4-inch nude heel dubbed “The Sledge” ($345) that caused a mini shopping frenzy as stores and Nordstrom struggled to keep them in stock. Now your Cinderella dreams can come true: You can walk into any of the brand’s U.S. stores and slip on the duchess-blessed footwear.

As expected, royal popularity is good for business: L.K. Bennett’s executive chairman, Robert Bensoussan, said in an interview with the Financial Times that the retailer has had a 17 percent increase in sales, and online sales soared 100 percent in the last year.

    L.K. Bennett; Getty Images file

Kate got glamorous in the L.K. Bennett Agata shoes at the ARK Charity Gala on June 9, 2011.

The company’s collection, which includes dresses, suits and purses, isn't entirely cheap. Prices range from $150-$600, and considering the royal fandom, we suspect there might be a stampede at the latest outlet, which joins other newly-opened U.S. locations, including Atlanta, Chicago, Houston and Hackensack, New Jersey.

Not near one of those locations? No worries, L.K. Bennett might be coming to your city soon. “We think we could go to 20 stores in the U.S. very quickly,” said Bensoussan.

One of the Duchess of Cambridge's favorite U.K stores, L.K. Bennett, is opening in New York this weekend. Zanna Roberts Rassi from Marie Claire magazine shows some of Kate's favorite dresses, handbags and shoes.

My blue suede shoes: Kate picks heels by student designer

    Getty Images, De Montfort University

The winning shoes were designed with Kate's style and engagement ring in mind.

    By Rachel Elbaum

Duchess Kate’s life must sometimes feel like a real life fairy tale, and on no day more than Thursday when she picked her very own “slippers” from a set of six that were designed just for her by a Leicester, England college student.

Although they weren’t made of glass, the shoes this modern-day Cinderella chose were nonetheless fit for royalty. Made out of royal blue suede covered in cream lace panels, they will be made into a wearable pair of heels for the duchess in the coming months.

They were designed by De Montfort University student Becka Hunt who was inspired by “the things Kate wears, her engagement ring and her style." (Kate obviously did not heed The Look's poll of the 6 designs. While Hunt's design garnered 19% of the vote, our readers' clear favorite, with 2,631 votes or 46.5%, was a tartan-inspired design.)

“I am absolutely overwhelmed, excited and amazed," the winning student said in a press release about the event. "The attention I have had since I was announced as the winner is all a little scary to be honest, but I have to say it has been great fun and hopefully this will be good for a future career.”

Despite her royal status, Kate is no clothes hound and gets a lot of wear out of her shoes. This winter, her footwear of choice has been a pair of black suede heels by Episode, while last spring and summer she often stepped out in nude patent pumps by L.K. Bennett. (Now available to the masses at Nordstrom and nordstrom.com, if you can afford the $325 price tag.)

    Pool / Reuters

A bit overdresed for a train ride with the in-laws? Who cares. Kate looked smashing in an L.K. Bennett outfit (reportedly bought at a second-hand store.) She topped off her ensemble with a James Lock hat.

Looking like a '40’s movie star in a teal belted outfit and jaunty black hat and those favorite Episode pumps, Kate made the trip to Leicester with her mother-in-law Queen Elizabeth II to kick off her Diamond Jubilee tour of the U.K., celebrating 60 years on the throne. Together with the Duke of Edinburgh, they left London on a 10:15 a.m. train.

The duchess's ride on public transportion wasn’t the only way she showed her common touch: her L.K. Bennett ensemble was reportedly bought at a second-hand store. What's more, it wouldn’t be Kate's first public appearance in something pre-owned: the grey coat-dress she wore at her February National Gallery appearance was from a second-hand shop near her parents’ home called “The Stock Exchange,” according to Grazia.

This was Kate’s second outing with the queen in the past week. Last Thursday, they visited the “royal grocer” Fortnum and Mason in London with Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and wife of Prince Charles.

Are we imagining things, or is spending so much time with her fashion-forward daughter-in-law rubbing off on the queen? Check out her hot pink coat and duo-tone hat!

Camilla pulls a Kate, dons an affordable (mail-order) dress

The Duchess of Cornwall, in an affordable blue dress, hosts a reception at Clarence House, central London in support of the Southbank Centre's Woman of the World festival on Feb. 28.

    By Rachel Elbaum

Duchess Kate is not the only royal who shops for affordable fashion these days. Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and the wife of Prince Charles, wore a mail-order dress earlier this week to a reception at her home, Clarence House.

She paired the 100 percent polyester tie-waist dress with stockings, heels and pearl jewelry for her appearance at the Women of the World event, which celebrates extraordinary women. The dress sells for 129 pounds, or about $205, and comes in navy, red and stone on the Artigiano website.

It seems that even royals love a good bargain: The 64-year-old duchess mentioned to admirers that the "'really, really good'' company has “a sale on at the moment," according to the U.K. Telegraph.

    artigiano.co.uk

The Artigiano tie-waist tailored dress comes in 100% polyester wool crepe.

Like her fashionable stepdaughter-in-law Kate, Camilla has made a big impact with her inadvertent advertising: a 500 percent jump in Artigiano's sales, according to the company, which has also seen new interest from customers in the U.S., the Far East and even Australia.

"The dress looked better on the duchess than it did on the image on our site," Artigiano's marketing director told TODAY.com, adding that international orders can be placed over the phone, but not online.

"If we would have known that she would wear our dress, then we would have been better prepared."

Rachel Elbaum is a London-based writer and unashamed royals watcher.

Fit for royalty: Duchess Kate to pick new shoes by student designer

    Chris Jackson / Getty Images

The Duchess of Cambridge, clad is her signature black pumps, meets a young girl as she visits Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust on Feb. 14 in Liverpool, England.

    By Rachel Elbaum

There are few better ways for a designer to showcase their work than to have Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, step out in one of their designs. Next week, one lucky student will have just that honor.

During a March 8 visit to Leicester marking the queen’s 60th year on the throne, Kate will announce her preferred pair of shoes among submissions from six students studying footwear design at De Montfort University. The design will then be made into a pair of shoes just for her.

Kate regularly sells out the clothing she wears in public. And although she has been seen in a wide variety of dresses, she is often pictured in the same black or nude patent heels.

“What a huge honor and magnificent opportunity this will be for the winning student,” said Dominic Shellard, vice-chancellor of De Montfort University in a press release. “When asked who their first commission was for at their first job interview, they will be able to reply, the Duchess of Cambridge, the world’s leading fashion icon.”

Which pair should Kate choose? Vote for your favorite submission:

    De Montfort University

Tabitha Duffield's sky-high heels feature daisies and pink leather.

    De Montfort University

Becka Hunt's 19th century-inspired shoes were designed "based around the things Kate wears, her engagement ring and her style."

    De Montfort University

"I wanted to make a cool and sexy shoe for a formal occasion," said Sam Sawkill in a De Montfort University press release. "It would be great to be selected over all as it would get me recognized as a designer."

    De Montfort University

"It is so exciting to be given the opportunity to design for the Duchess," said Kay Yeng Cheng of Leicester. "It makes my family very proud to know I am involved in something like this and as a future designer it's a really good start."

    De Montfort University

Summer Spencer's design was inspired by Kate and William's coat of arms, which includes tartan to reflect their time at university in Scotland.

    De Montfort University

"The concept comes from this being the year of the dragon and its shape is inspired by a lantern," said Mei Chun Lai of Taiwan. "I wanted to show my culture and background through my design."

Which design should Kate choose to have made into a pair of shoes?

All these shoes look incredibly tall and painful. None of her current shoes are like that.

She does it again! Duchess Kate sells out wool coat

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge wore a brown wool coat from British retailer Hobbs on a visit to the northern city of Liverpool. The coat is currently sold out on the brand's website, but more stock is due in later this week.

The Duchess of Cambridge sure does have the golden touch, and we don’t mean the adoration she inspires in everyone who meets her. Once again, Kate has prompted a royal buying spree.

During a visit to Liverpool on Tuesday, she wore a brown wool coat by British retailer Hobbs, which sold out within hours, although the chain declined to say how many it had in stock at the time. But fear not, you may still be able to get your hands on the £182, or $285, “Unlimited Celeste Flared Coat.” While earlier it was listed as not in stock, the website now says that more are due in this week. Hobbs even ships to the U.S. for an extra £20, or $31.

The knee-length chestnut brown coat features a leather belt around the waist, as well as around the wrists. Under it, she wore a black turtleneck dress, black tights and high black suede heels.

"We are delighted to see our designers getting recognition for their creative talent and the Hobbs brand credentials," said chairman Iain MacRitchie. "With the U.K.'s strength and depth of contemporary British designer fashion it is fantastic to see this important industry increasingly getting a worldwide profile."

The newlywed was left celebrating Valentine’s Day alone, while her husband William is on duty in the Falklands as a search and rescue helicopter pilot. But she was not left without flowers, thanks to 8-year-old Jaqson Johnston-Lynch, who presented her with a bouquet and a cupcake.

Kate’s visit to the northern city was her second major solo appearance in a week. Last Wednesday, she attended the opening of the Lucian Freud exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery, of which she is a patron.

While in Liverpool she visited a children’s hospital and a non-alcoholic bar, part of the Action on Addiction project, another of her charities. While at the bar, she drank a smoothie named after her called The Duchess.

How about an article about the charity work, etc. that she's involved in? Yes, she's pretty, and dresses well, but she's more than a 2-dimensional clothes horse.

Banana Republic selling Duchess Kate copycat dress

    Getty Images file; bananarepublic.com

Kate Middleton wearing a Reiss dress during the Obama's state visit in London on May 24; a version of the popular dress available from Banana Republic.

    By Rina Raphael

Banana Republic just copied Duchess Kate’s style: The retailer made a nearly identical replica of the royal’s famous, khaki-colored sheath dress by British brand Reiss. Kate had worn the chic, cap-sleeved bandage dress to meet President and Michelle Obama last May, and it quickly sold out at Reiss stores and crashed their website.

Michelle Obama, in a Barbra Tfank dress, chats with Duchess Kate at Buckingham Palace during a state visit on May 24.

While Banana Republic's edition – actually called the “Kate sheath” – is missing the bottom pleating, it still boasts the original frock's elegant silhouette and accentuated waistband. According to online reviewers, "while it is not as exquisitely designed and cut as (the original Reiss dress), it's a fine twist on a classic shape" and has "just enough stretch without being clingy."

Even better, Banana Republic’s newest addition sells for $130, approximately $210 less than the original Reiss style. Now that's a trend we can get behind.

How to dress like (birthday girl) Duchess Kate

    Getty

The fashionable Duchess of Cambridge attends the UK premiere of War Horse at Odeon Leicester Square on Jan. 8, in London, England.

Duchess Kate turns 30 today and though she didn't throw a lavish bash (sorry, Prince Harry), she did manage to bid farewell to her 20s in style: The fashionable royal wore a stunning lace gown by Alice Temperley at the "War Horse" London premiere this weekend. (In an interview with the BBC, director Steven Spielberg said his wife Kate Capshaw needed to pass tissues to the crying duchess, who was reportedly touched by the film).

As for her birthday celebration, Palace officials say Kate will have a "low-key and private" affair, dissapointing fans who believed last week's rumors that she was planning a wild '80s themed karaoke bash.  No matter how what she does, we here wish her a very happy birthday! We're celebrating the only way we know how — with a shopping guide!

Caitlin Moran of Style Within Reach rounded up affordable Kate-inspired buys in honor of her royal style:

    Caitlin Moran

    1. Pearlescent flower studs, $3.80, Forever21
    2. Trenchcoat, $49.99, H&M
    3. Halston Heritage dress, $130, The Outnet
    4. Cardigan, $24.95, H&M
    5. Pinstriped welt-pocket shirt, $17.50, Old Navy
    6. Wisteria Shirtdress, $76, Topshop
    7. Mossimo womens' skinny jeans, $27.99, Target
    8. Chelsea flat, $16.99, Payless
    9. Lace skater dress, $35, Oasis

The Duchess of Cambridge dazzled at the "War Horse" premiere as she got ready to turn 30 with an 80's themed bash, planned by her sister Pippa and Prince Harry. Michelle Kosinski reports.

    Flashback: Duchess Kate's Scout style

    MAVRIXONLINE.COM

Having the best time? Prior to becoming a royal, the Duchess of Cambridge was a Brownie under Girlguiding UK in 1990. She's shown wearing a traditional Brownie uniform which included a yellow sweatshirt, brown or tan skirt and a yellow necktie.

    By Rina Raphael

Like Princess Diana, Duchess Kate revealed her first charities for which she will lend her official patronage — and many of them help children in need. One charity in particular seems especially close to the newlywed's heart: the Scout Association, for which she will serve as a volunteer leader with the youngest scouts — Beaver Scouts and Cub Scouts — near the home she shares with Prince William in north Wales.

Part of the reason? Kate was a precious Brownie at age eight, no doubt a large influence in her love of the outdoors (just this past July, in fact, she was photographed participating in a boat race in Canada).  A St. James’s Palace spokesman told the Daily Mail that Kate "loved the idea of Scouting and working hands-on with children" and felt a connection to the cause.

Not that she'll get the royal treatment. Kate will have to earn her stripes: The royal will have to lay off the Reiss and don the official uniform of a blue shirt, scarf and woggle during club meetings. Her duties will include helping plan activities, such as "running games, teaching first aid and helping out with cooking and campfires," according to the Daily Mail,

She'll even have to recite the Scout Promise, in which she'll vow to "do my best to do my duty to God and to the Queen, to help other people, and to keep the Scout Law".
