Plaid-off! TODAY Professionals choose between Matt, Al

    By Steve Veres

From whether men make better Secret Service agents than women to genetic testing for fatal diseases, TODAY Professionals have tackled some contentious issues.

But today they picked up a really hot potato: Which TODAY anchor looks best in a plaid jacket?

The plaid madness started last Thursday when Matt’s plaid jacket made such a big fashion statement that it got its own Twitter account, courtesy of Savannah Guthrie. Then yesterday, Al upped the ante in an eye-catching salmon-colored number. But which anchor pulled off plaid better?

Kelly Osbourne, a panelist on E! Network's TV show "Fashion Police" and a guest on the TODAY Professionals panel, was solidly in Matt's corner. "It's so hard to say this because I love them both so much, but I have to say Matt because it's so classic," she said.

Dr. Nancy Snyderman, returning from her overseas vacation, agreed. "Matt's jacket made news in Italy," she said.

By that point, Al had heard enough and interrupted the segment to defend his jacket, which he said he bought last year. "He's a Johnny-come-lately," Al  joked about Matt.

    TODAY

He then flashed the inside of the tan jacket he was wearing today, revealing that the lining was colored ... salmon!

"Al's always rocking the salmon whether we see it or not," Savannah laughed.

And TODAY.com readers vindicated our weatherman's look. By the time of the segment, Al was winning the "Who wore it better" poll by a wide margin.

Do you agree? Click here to weigh in!

Steve Veres, an editor for TODAY.com, is amused the plaid madness is making news overseas.

I found nothing objectionably "LOUD" about Matt or Al's plaid, HOWEVER, I found ANN CURRY's mockery especially rude and distasteful; even "mean girl"! I would like to point out that her TASTE *** is not so wonderful.

Al rocks a plaid jacket; does he wear it better than Matt?

    By Steve Veres

Is plaid the new fad? It's starting to look that way, judging from what Al wore today.

Though the New York weather outside was dreary this morning, our co-anchor warmed up Studio 1A by wearing a salmon-colored plaid jacket.

His swanky style caught the eye of dozens of viewers on Twitter and Pinterest -- and even E!'s Giuliana Rancic!

Fashion Police loved it!!! @todayshow: RT @alroker Thanks to all who enjoyed the jacket today. For those who didn't, it's just a jacket...

    — Giuliana Rancic (@GiulianaRancic) May 1, 2012

Al's bold fashion statement came on the heels of Matt wearing a plaid jacket last Thursday. That was such a noteworthy event that Savannah created the Twitter account @MattPlaidJacket, which already has 1,000 followers!

Two plaid jackets in less than a week begs the fashion face-off question: Who wears it better? Vote in our poll on the right.

A few viewers have already weighed in on Twitter:

@SavannahGuthrie @todayshow WOW! Al Roker's Jacket makes Matt Lauer's Plaid jacket look plain!Only Al can pull off a look like that!

@SavannahGuthrie Is Al Roker's jacket trying to outshine Matt's jacket?

What idiot put Kelly Osborne on the same stage with the professionals to comment on current events? This was my favorite spot on the Today Show, listening to accomplished professionals speak their opinions on events of the day. How does Kelly Osborne fit into this criteria?? I believe it was the Osb …

Anchors don ugly Christmas sweaters: Whose was the worst?

'Tis the season ... for ugly Christmas sweaters!

Once an endearing gift from a well-meaning grandma, hideous jumpers have become a fad, spawning booming businesses, Facebook groups and sweater parties.

Savannah picked out some especially gnarly knits for our anchors and a few guests (Brian Williams and Matt Damon got roped in, as well as our crew and the entire control room). Check out the pics below and vote in our poll: Whose sweater is the ugliest?

As a person who has unabashadly worn Christmas sweaters (note no "uglly") for 30 years I would like to say this.... I think all you who are now pretending that you want to wear these sweaters as a joke are posers.

The TODAY talent's favorite holiday hostess gifts

'Tis the season to stock up on hostess gifts! From scented candles to tasty treats, find out what TODAY on-air talent love to give and get during the holidays:

    NBC, Diptyque

Ann says she loves to give candles, although she doesn't have one specific brand (she's an equal opportunity sniffer!). We recommend the Dipytque line, which ranges from spicy (pomander) to floral (gardenia) scents. Diptyque Paris, $28-$60, Diptyque

    NBC, tastingsgourmetmarket.com

Natalie knows the way to a host's heart is through the stomach. What does she depend on? "Always wine and maybe a food item, cheese or dessert," Natalie said. We suggest Fromage d'Affinois, a rich and creamy cow's milk cheese. Fromage d'Affinois, Tastings Gourmet Market

    Getty Images, Jo Malone

Al surely knows how to sniff out a good gift. He's a fan of the Jo Malone grapefruit candle. Jo Malone candle, $35, Neiman Marcus

    NBC, MarieBelle

Savannah has a holiday sweet tooth: she likes to give the tasty gift of MarieBelle's hot chocolate. Single-serving hot chocolate envelopes, $27, MarieBelle

    NBC, Chappellet Vineyard

Was there any question that Kathie Lee likes to give wine? "I had [Chappellet 2010 Chardonnay] recently and liked it," the fourth-hour host told People magazine. "It's  great hostess gift!" 2010 Chappellet, $32, Chappellet.com

    TODAY, Bakes by Melissa

Sara Haines relies on something sweet during the festive season: Baked by Melissa mini cupcakes. "They are amazing," says Sarah. "LOVE them." Mini cupcakes, 25 / $20,  Baked by Melissa

    AP, Santa Maria Novella

The favorite hostess gift of Star Jones of TODAY's Professionals comes from Santa Maria Novella. "I have given a variety of their items from $25 to $100," says Jones, "but within your budget, I would choose the scented tablets for closets." Scented tablets, $30, Lafcony.com

    TODAY, Uncommongoods.com

TODAY style editor Bobbie Thomas is all about education -- especially when it comes to cheese. She's a fan of the chalkboard cheese board: "Who doesn't love knowing what 'that' is?" Reclaimed slate cheese board, $48, Uncommongoods.com

    NBC, Papyrus

"I take a nice set of cards or stationery," NBC’s chief medical editor Dr. Nancy Snyderman said of her holiday season gift. We recommend the sophisticated and clever card sets from Kate Spade. Confetti cards, $20, Papyrus

    NBC, Jennifermillerjewelry.com

"These candles from Jennifer Miller Jewelry are my favorite hostess gifts!" says Jill Martin. "Every woman loves a fun candle to spruce up any room." Peace candle, 2 / $30, Jennifermillerjewelry.com

    TODAY, williams-sonoma.com

One of TODAY nutritionist Joy Bauer's favorite hostess gifts is an oil mister. "These reusable misters allow you to save hundreds of calories by lightly coating your pans with oil instead of pouring it straight from the bottle" Joy explained. "Plus, they’re better for the environment (and your wallet) than those disposable canisters!" Oil Mister, $15, Williams Sonoma

Dapper Roker dazzles in summer suit

    TODAY

Yes, Al Roker isn't afraid to get fierce with his wardrobe.

    By Rina Raphael

Watch out, Matt Lauer: You have some competition in the fashion department.

Al Roker donned a bright, eye-catching ensemble for Friday's show, prompting fans to commend him for his "snazzy" and "sharp" style. Even the TODAY family took notice: "Not many people can pull off a red blazer," tweeted Jeff Rossen.

Al Roker, ever the style perfectionist, set the news correspondent straight. "Check your TV," Al replied on Twitter. "Coral sports coat with blue stripe and matching tie."

    TODAY

Like a wild hurricane, Al Roker's suit takes the plaza by storm.

How many shoes do YOU own? The anchors count 'em up

    TODAY

    By Amy DiLuna

Pro poker player Beth Shak's footwear obsession -- she may own 1,200 shoes -- spurred our anchors to talk about their own shoe habits.

We see Matt, Ann, Al and Natalie every day -- slick-shined wingtips on the guys, sky-high stiletto platforms on the women. But just how many pairs populate their closets?

"Probably 15," Al said. "Probably between 50 and 75, somewhere in that range," Natalie said.

Ann was a bit more wary. "I never counted," she hedged at first. When prodded, she admitted that if you factor in flip-flops she owns close to 80 pairs of shoes.

    TODAY

    Amy Robach's shoes.

Amy Robach, sporting a pair of borrowed glittering sky-high purple Christian Louboutin platforms, said she has about 50.

Matt admitted to having between 30 and 35 pairs in his closet. But maybe that's because it's full with a different garment - his extensive tie collection.

"I have a ridiculous amount of ties," Matt said -- who places his neckwear haul at under 300, but "probably" over 200. "And not all of them are polka dot," cracked Ann.

Later, Matt put the question to Martha Stewart. And of course, Martha gave the perfect answer.

"Not enough, obviously," she laughed. "My shoes never wear out, so I wear the same shoes for years."

How many shoes do YOU own. And yes, we're including flip-flops!

In Vatican City, Al and Matt hang on to their hats

On Thursday's special edition of TODAY from Vatican City, Matt and Al sported white fedoras to shield their heads from the bright sun beating down on St. Peter's Square. Matt explained that Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York City had tipped them off to the spiffy headgear, available on the streets of Rome.

"They're basically made of paper," Matt told Meredith Vieira. "They cost six euros, so about 11 bucks. They are well worth the investment."

For style as well as comfort, Al added. Paraphrasing Will Smith in "Men in Black," Al said, "We make this look good."

So good, in fact, that "it's already catching on on this side," Meredith said, as the camera revealed her and Ann wearing white chapeaus, along with the gang in the TODAY control room.

Not to be outdone, Al pointed to the TODAY crew in St. Peter's Square, also wearing white hats. Talk about a fashion fad. Watch the video:
