Michelle Obama wears $39.99 Jason Wu for Target dress

Reuters, Target

The first lady wore the Jason Wu for Target dress, which is sold out online but still available in some stores, while promoting her "Let's Move" initiative in Orlando, Florida on February 10.

I was still so exhausted from my Target from Missoni debacle back in September (it literally took almost a whole day to order a skirt and a couple of baby items) that I didn't even attempt to jump online when the Jason Wu for Target collection went on sale Super Bowl Sunday. As is becoming the norm with the discount chain's designer collaborations, most of the collection sold out within hours, so when I finally did make it to my local Target this weekend there were only a sad 7 items total left.

But the almost empty racks did contain an adorable navy floral chiffon dress, and guess who has it in her wardrobe? The first lady, who basically put the Taiwan-born, American-educated designer on the map when she donned a dramatic ivory Wu-designed gown for her husband's 2009 inaugural ball. Mrs. Obama wore the $39.99 dress over the weekend at a press event in Florida.

As the Huffington Post points out, FLOTUS made the look her own by replacing the gold belt with a red one and adding a royal blue cardigan. The dress is still available in stores if you want to pick it up. At my local Clifton, N.J. Target, I spotted two of those frocks (one of which was missing the belt). As it happens, my colleague Carissa Ray (TODAY.com's supervising multimedia producer) bought the same dress at a store in Brooklyn on Saturday. (And now you know what TODAY.com staffers do with our weekends! And that we have excellent taste.)

Susan Houriet/TODAY.com

The dress worn by Michelle Obama is still available in some Target stores, including this one in Clifton, N.J.

Mrs. Obama's press secretary confirmed to TODAY.com that indeed she was wearing a dress from the Target collection, but didn't have any information about whether FLOTUS waited in line to buy it herself (unlikely, but not impossible, as she has been known to hit her local Target). But I'm curious to see whether she trots out more of the collection in the future. Could a cat-print tote be next, or would Bo be offended?

Did you purchase any of the Jason Wu items at Target? Let us know in the comments below.

TODAY.com supervising producer Susan Houriet owns more than 20 designer-for-Target collection pieces, some of which she can even still fit into after having a baby (who has her own Missoni for Target dress and leggings).

Great dress - I love the bold feminine styles on Michelle - she has the frame and grace to wear them well.

On the down-side: whoever the photographer is - he needs to be shown the door. For a setting that is set around dinner this is a ridiculous photo to capture the event and a sense of the experience. Not one for the history books or even a webpage. Furthermore if you are going to talk about the dress how about a pic that we can actually see the dress? Too much to ask i guess. Send the photographer back to school.

I do not feel she wears the most flattering dresses or slacks. She always sweaters which are too short and tight. She always wears this big black belt way too high...and her slacks are too tight. I am not sure from where her title of fashion 'icon and trendsetter' came, but I do not get it. I have shopped AND bought from Target, so that is not a big deal - I just think there are more flattering styles she could (and should) wear.

I can almost guarantee you that the Obama's - and their friends - own stock in Target. Otherwise, why would a woman that spends $600 on a pair of ugly sneakers and millions of taxpayer dollars on vacations, be wearing a $40 dress.

There has got to be money in it for Doublewide

The dress looks nice and the first lady makes it look even better.

The whole point of the article (aside from Mrs. Obama promoting the designer), is to show people that everyone can wear clothing that costs a reasonable amount. We don't have to buy all the latest "trendy" top of the line items that cost a minimum of 5X what they're worth. Spend the savings on something else or save it.

So what if the dress is $10 to $20000 .. what matter is she like the dress plus she save us alot of taxes. She was being conservative with our tax money so stfu about .. thank you michelle what a beautiful dress u have and I meant it not because u paid it for $40.

I frankly like the fact that she still tries to be frugal despite being the First Lady. She's not living it up as the Queen of America. I believe Nancy Reagan was criticized for her expensive tastes while in the White House.

So she paid only 40.00 for THIS dress, what about the vacations (too many to mention) the firing up of Airforce One EVERY WEEKEND... and all the money she has wasted??? Yeah.. she saved us money one ONE dress... wow.. she's wonderful --- NOT...

Just another way to show how CLASSLESS she is.. She states "Ive never been proud of America (before they voted in my husband)... well let me say this, I have never been so UNPROUD of America, for voting in any other president and his ho hum wife. She is tacky through and through... I Just pray the American people have wised up...

The fact is most of you have missed the point of the article. Maybe more of an effort should be put toward comprehending what you're reading instead of posting foolishness. I wonder how many of you would be able to stand in a mirror or look at your mothers and say, "I'm a size four, I'm striving to be healthy, I too shop at Target, I am trying to make a difference in my community, etc....". Probably, none. Before you reply, "well, I or my mom aren't charged with leading the nation", think about how you really are. All of us are charged with making our communities, nation, and world a better place. The fact you have so much negativity proves you aren't on your jobs. Put some of that energy in becoming the positive icon for others to follow. Whether it's your mother, the community, or even yourself, I'm sure there is something more you could do at this point than to "bad mouth" this country's leadership.

Continue to rise above the haters who first criticize you for being too curvy, then when you focus on health and lose weight they ciriticize you for being too healthy or too tall, too small waist, etc....all the while most of them are fat and lazy. You silence your critics with your "actions" towards better health and living.

We are quite grown up, however we are not as stupid as the Obama's would wish. After the princess in jewels and costly outfits, the drop down to target dress is purely a political gambit and anyone who doesn't know that is probably one of the Obama supporters. Being one of those requires either a low I.Q, a lack of education or being wiling to sell your vote for gimmies.

Well Gerry -637377, there's nothing wrong with wearing "too tight" slacks or your "belt high" if you have the body to compliment it which most young African-American women do. No, she does not, thank God, have " the style of Jackie O, Princess Di, Kate Middleton, Carla Bruni,Jackie O, Princess Di, Kate Middleton, Carla Bruni,... Most African-American women are more voluptuously curvaceous and proportionately endowed without being Rubenesque. Whereas most white women are quite a bit flatter, especially in the derriere region with straighter more boyish proportions. Thus we have the phenomenon of white women attempting to become more curvaceous on the style of African-Americans by plumping up their lips and silicon enhancements of their derrieres in futile attempts to replicate the look you deride.

I think the first lady is HOT... She carries herself with grace and dygnity... A lot better than most of those people that have negative things to say about her...

Ive never heard much said about Nancy Reagan's spending sprees for her designer gowns or Barbara Bushes etc.

Mrs. Obama has more class than those little, small minded people who have nothing better to do than attack the presidents wife... I think I'll check out Target just for the fun of it...

Those who have to criticize the looks of our elegant and beautiful First Lady say more about themselves in their ignorant comments than they ever do about her. And, for the gazillionth time - the first family pays for their own vacations - just like every President and his family have done. Plus, they have still taken half as many as the Bush's did during the same time. Ray - clearly your only taste is in your mouth.

Proud to be an American - the uneducated one here appears to be you. The first family only travels at the taxpayers expense when they are on official business. And, they buy their own food, clothes, etc. Ignorance is pathetic!

#1.29 .What a great normal family for people to see as role models...

I don't care about the dress... if it's actually a part of her wardrobe, that's great, but would she wear it with $42,000 worth of diamond bracelets? I doubt it - I concede that the bracelets were ON LOAN to her for a DNC fundraiser, however, whether they be "blood" diamonds (as some have reported) or "ethical" diamonds - I find the flaunting of them a bit too much. A dress from Target - fine. Diamonds that are worth more than many people's houses? Bracelets more than anyone working for minimum wage (for several years)? I understand she didn't buy them, but I do find it tacky that she chose to wear them while this country (which is made up of PEOPLE) is in a debt crisis.

http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/218493/20110922/michelle-obama-wears-42k-diamond-bracelets-to-ny-dnc-fundraiser-katie-decker.htm

I am far from a "right-winger" and given the candidates - I would vote for Obama again, but to say things like "they pay for their own vacations" .... that's half the story, who pays for their bodyguards that they have everyday and which are probably tripled on vacation? Taxpayers pay for the small army that follows them on a daily basis - and I assume, they are comped a lot of luxuries that you or I would not get if we booked the same room in Paris - let's face it, they are not flying coach.

I do not mean to disrespect Mrs. Obama or the President - I think all Presidents and First Ladies should live the life they had before election (with the exception of needed bodyguards & use of the White House). After all, aren't they supposed to be working for the people? In order to do that they need to stay in touch with the average American (fly economy w army of bodyguards, etc).

Do you think this is the first President and First Lady that took many trips and vacations? Do you think they are the first to buy expensive clothing? I assure you...they are not! I applaud her for making a point to ALL women, that you do not have to spend big bucks to dress well and look good...and that was the point of the article. Not all women can afford brand names (LOTS OF WOMEN). I'm off to Target (even though I have the $ to shop at Nordstrom) because...who doesn't like to save a buck?! Thanx Michelle

Actually, it just occurred to me that the East Coast doesn't have many (some states none) Target stores - so for fun, I looked up Target in Washington, D.C - there is EXACTLY ONE Target store...maybe she orders online. I think it would be difficult for any person in the area to really "know" what Target offers- if it is not a chain store in the area. Just a fun fact - no disrespect to the First Lady or Target.

I think it just shows how connected she is to the ordinary Americans as she doesn't look down on people because of her socio-economic status. If she was squandering money on name brand clothed, people would have something to say about that too. They can't do anything right in some peoples eyes, and they are the best role models for family; in a First Family that America has seen in a looooong time. President Obama doesn't have any ex-wives or mistresses, his background is pretty safe, and he has a wife that doesn't try to be a policy maker, but is just a good mate to President Obama and works on her innitiative as a First Lady. This country could get a lot accomplished if my fellow Republicans would just work with President Obama and put aside the fact that he has African blood in him. The disrespect for President Obama is like nothing I have ever seen towards a highly elected official in my lifetime. President Carter wasn't disrespected like this, although its close. The things I've seen done and said to him, those same people would dare not do to the head of a foreign country. Never heard a US Congressman call the President a lie on national television while making his State Of The Union address and never before witnessed a person shaking their finger in the President Of The United States face. Some people would rather see America cave in than to support President Obama in getting this Country back to the shape of the Clinton years..... They have the I'd rather die than to have my arm cut off mentality... Its sad to say the least!! God Bless President Obama and God Bless the United States of America!!!!

By wearing Target Dresses (I like some Target's clothes)---Michelle is trying to connect to the "Middle Class" of America. Most ofTarget's clothing is not cheap anymore--

How much do her Ballroom Designer Dresses Cost for Lavish State Dinners?---She looks fabulous in all of them.

Good Lord this seed reeks of Foxpharts, smelly insulting anklebiting dumpster diving to besmirch the good First Lady Michelle.Your hatred of her, for an accident of marriage is more illustrative of your petty bitterness rather than any reflection on her. The right thinks the first family is "fair game" I thank god I don't feel the need to tear down a 1st lady by virtue of who she is married to, or disparage their adolescent children as the right has done since amy carter. If you want to bust some Flotus' chops you should have torn into nancy Reagan, who received tons of clothes and jewelry and failed to disclose it in their tax returns, wore $80,000 dollar ensembles in the 1980s. But I'm not sayig that to bust on her, aside from the chiding of the Reagans use of psychics and her tone deaf just say no during the crack epidemic, she was a lovely 1st and ...Imagine if Michelle Obama killed somebody as a young woman as Laura Bush had....the spin and conspiracies would never end 24/7 365 till jan20 2017 her last day as Flotus and beyond. I could have done that because she was married to a pol i didn't agree with, all the left could have, but you never heard that in any sustained coordinated way the try to tear down democratic flotus'.
Go ahead haters, keep spewing your bile, keep showing us who you are, it only helps the President'e reelection.

BTW Michelle Obama is one of the most beautiful 1sts we've ever had and probably the most physically fit

It really is an exercise in futility to argue the merits of the Flotus wearing a dress from target with people who think that the ONLY worthwhile Americans are Rich Americans.

If the First Lady wore only million dollar designer ball gowns, those same people would be sniveling about how she thinks she's Queen Elizabeth, or something.

And, they'll do it while glamorizing and glorifying Cindy McCain.

Fruitless pursuit, I tell ya.

Hey. Funny story:

My kids have "Rockem Sockem Robots" and Barbies with all the accessories....One day they put a wig on one of the robots and a little lip gloss and, VOILA! Sarah Palin. It was even the Red Robot.

Funny.

Honestly. The very same people wouldn't ever consider the new Miss Universe or Halle Berry attractive either. They probably think that Scarlett Johansen and Claire Dane look too "black."

Then they'll go out and spend thousands on collagen injections and botox and Tanning spas. There are even jeans that make you look like you have more booty. A million dollar industry.

We know why you kind folks on the right are so upset.

If we all write the reporter who did this story, maybe they'll apologize for over-estimating you?

What d'ya say, people?

Have a nice day.

I particularly like her fashion ideals.

I buy more expensive couture when my budget can handle it, but often buy items at lower price stores to accent my designer buys...it's a great way of staying chic, but not homely.

Go Michelle!

will you people that complain all the time just be quiet and maybe you would understand some things the vacations yes they take them but for the President he still works on them he still gets briefings and has to do work.....yea some vacation....it is so he can spend more then 5 min with his family....and the firing up Air Force 1 that is what the president flies on because it is safe......traveling with body guards.....again to keep the President safe....and in case you did not know it all the presidents get the body guards even if they are no longer in office they still have them for life (first ladies included) so if you are going to complain about things then complain about that.

The ones that say she is to fat and to ugly get a life women are not the stick figures that you see on the runways real women have curves.

I guess it's time for MSN's wekly dose of "The Fashionable Looks of Michelle Obama"...and this week's addition puts her in a $40 dress while her husband is out there pointing his skinny little finger at the 'middle class' whom he continually yelps about trying to save from those evil Republicans across the aisle.

I guess we're finally getting that "transparency" we were promised...their political manuvers are as transparent as mountain air.

Randy...

Laura Bush was in a traffic accident when she was young and another person died as a result. I'm sure it has affected her every day of her life, yet she seemed to turn out quite well during her lifetime.

You could have phrased it just a tad differently...your words made her seem like the 'Son of Sam'.

First Ladies have always been scrutinized or criticized for what they wear. Everybody loved Jackie Kennedy's designer suits, hats, and ballgowns. Then people screamed how dowdy Rosalynn Carter was because she did her own hair and did not dress in haute couture. Then Nancy Reagan came along and wore designer duds that cost more than most people make in a year. Then Barbara Bush came along and people said she was too matronly. Then Laura Bush came along and people said, oh she's pretty, but she needs to lose weight, no matter what she wore. Now, it's Ms. Obama's turn to be under the miscroscope.

Honestly, folks, give these ladies a break. What would YOU be wearing if you were in the White House?

Nope...she "never did anything to me" and it appears she's a great mom and maybe a great wife. But that doesn't alter the fact that we will be getting a weekly dose of her as a campaign pawn because the hubby's support from women has fallen and it doesn't alter the fact that "beautiful is a bit of a stretch.

Why does every woman in the news, sports, music, or movies have to be force-fed to us as "beautiful" ???

Why must that be so important ?

I love The First Lady's taste in clothes. She wears them fabulously, too, with her toned looks. Hot. I love the $40 dress, but my upper arms are not as exemplary as FLOTUS'. I could not carry off this dress with her pizzazz. Yep, she is a fashion icon in my book. I admire her choices. BTW, I think that the word beautiful fits: she carries herself with aplomb and she wears her clothes with flair and panache. She has a glow. Her intelligence and her love for her family show. This is what beauty is. (I admit to envy of her upper arm musculature and apparent lack of fatty tissue!!!!!)

David, Obama has only taken 68 days of vacation in 3 years, Bush took 477 in his 8 years. At this pace Obama will have taken only 181 in 8 years, that is less than 40% of what Bush took.

I'm pretty sure his job is more stressful than yours, and don't forget Bush took more vacation days than any President on record, including Obama by a longshot. As for the dress, she looks good in it. People have talked about the First Lady's clothes ever since Jackie Kennedy, they aren't going to stop now just because you don't like the person in office. Actually, I got that number above wrong, he spent 487 days at Camp David. He spent an addiitonal 490 days at his ranch in Texas, making the total 977 days on vacation (32% of his time in office). So Obama is on pace for less than 20% of what Bush took.

And to even make the bigot angry, she had her own money and education before all this. I never heard a word when Mrs. Bush wore designer frocks that cost a lot of money, Oh! To David Smith - I took my head out of my ass and did some homework.

        From source #1:

Obama - 61 days of vacation so far

GW - 180 days of vacation / more than $20 million spent, and used Air Force One for vacation more than any other president (during 8 years)

        Clinton - 28 days (during 8 years)

        GH - 112 days (during 8 years)

        From Source #2:

Obama - 26 days (in first year)

        GW - 1020 days

        Kennedy - 1000 days

        ===================

Your comment - "Obama's have taken more vacations and spent more money while doing so, than all of the past Presidents and their families combined" (B....... S.........)

        ===================

No matter what source you use, or how you look at it, other presidents have spent more money, and more time on vacation. For anyone who says that because of how bad the economy is, the president shouldn't be taking vacation, well the economy was worse during GW years, and our national security was facing more of a security threat from terrorism but that didn't stop him from vacationing. At least right now the economy is recovering and getting better overall.

And to deal sabotaging efforts from Republicans in office who are more worried the corporate elite than the middle/lower class, and who care more about forcing their religion and social ideas upon us than trying to create jobs, and with all the bigots and haters that live bitter lives, Obama deserves a vacation to get some rest just from that alone.

Whats wrong with this picture? sure she is the first lady and all, very well educated too, but notice the picture everyone in it seems to be doing something in the kitchen while she waits at her plate! isn't that how socialist do it? its true a picture is worth a thousand words.

There is a difference between working at home and flying all over hell and back, Obama has taken more vacations then other presidents!I don't think he has even seen his house in Illinois since he moved into the white house, he sure has seen allot of that jumbo jet since he got it, and he put more personal miles on it than all the other Presidents combined. Bush used his ranch as a western white house, he would entertain foreign dignitaries their and work from their, Reagan was much the same with his ranch in California, that means we did not have the overhead of renting at high $$$ a entire three floors of a luxury hotel. most all presidents used their residence as a alternate white house, but not Obama. Obama is expensive stop making excuses for him. when he goes on retreat its mass spending right down to paying the local police dept for extra police all over town, and its not just Air Force one there are fighter escorts cargo planes with limos and extra cars for security, its a Armada in the sky. so tighten your belt while Obama wrings another $ 100,000,000.00 dollar vacation out of you. We never paid that to rent Bushes ranch. Obama has to win re election he already used up the vacation time that comes with it.

@TerryCa, those presidents didn't spend a extra few million a day when they went home for a working retreat, they didnt fly all over the world they just went home, carter didnt want to spend time at home and the Clintons never had a home, get your head out of dark places and look around. I think the Clintons are still waiting for someone to give them a home.

Wish you Liberals would get off the race card! and stop reading into the post things that were never even mentioned. no wonder this world is so focked up! who writes you programs. or is it some form of scalar mind control?

D Buck2239568: the tea party the Ku Klux Klan and every other right wing nut case out their has turned the race card into a work of art so why should a pale face puppy like you be listen to? The reason that you don't like the race card being mentioned(unless its republicans, teatards, or your Klan buddies) is because your relatives invented it. Sounds like you are trying to pull a bitch move using pure B.S. Better yet why don't you go and find Glover Norquist bend over so he can fock you some more.

Conservatives are funny when they try to come across as being against racism. They wanna be ALL the good things, you know.

They wanna eat Ring Dings and Fried Pork skins, but they want you to CALL them healthy eaters 'cause that's what they wanna be known as.

They wanna trash the economy and hate all but a FEW Americans, but they want to be KNOWN as Fiscally responsible, Patriots.

They wanna be racist, but they'd rather YOU be labled with the name. They'd prefer to be called all the good names.

Although the dress itself is cute---I find the FIRST LADY of the United Sates of America shopping at target TACKY at best. She is thee First lady after all and although trying to blend in with middle class and lower income people she instead comes off as TACKY and lacking of the Class necessary of a First Lady. Could you imagine Jackie K, Mrs. Regan or Lady Bird projecting a Target image---such would be beneath them to project even if they had shopped there they had too much class to admit it!

People can still be classy when poor---it is a mind set and projection of the individual and how they carry themselves. Rosa Parks may have been somewhat poor but she had class and portrayed it; Mrs O is lacking this necessary portrayal class as she tries to blend she fails as a classy leader.

Since there is only ONE Target in D.C., I'm sure a handler bought the dress - What is wrong with Target? She may be the First Lady but she is supposed to represent the people. It's ONE dress - last week it was her wearing $42,000 worth of diamond bracelets (on loan) - which I found tacky, two weeks ago it was that she spent $50,000 on lingerie - something I cannot even fathom or comment on. The US was founded to get away from the system of Monarchy - if this article was never written, how many people would think it was a very expensive dress - I know I would assume that. You only find it "tacky" because it was from Target....I think there are larger problems in the country - but I wish she were standing in the photo because I bet she looked very stylish in it - money doesn't equal style - look at Fashion Week in NYC, would you like her to wear those expensive & bizarre (hats that look a bit like a toilet seat) fashions instead?

It's about time she walks the talk. Everybody made such a big deal during the first campaign about how she just wore what most other women would wear and was so down to earth and shopped in stores that everybody could afford. Well, after hearing that she wore something from Black house White White Market, I decided to check that store out. WHOA! Most everyday women you will find shopping for daily stuff at Target or the mall.... but not that place. A simple cami (spaghetti strap undershirt for those who don't know) sells for about $50! She definately wasn't like every other woman I know. It's nice to see her finally getting real. (though I still don't care for her or her husband) Now if they could take one vacation a year like the rest of us I'd be pleased. Sorry.... couldn't help myself.

Before you criticize how many vacations they took why dont you look up how many bush took by this time in his presidency. there were way more vacation days spent by bush than by the Obama's. and they cost just as much even though bush was flying on cheaper gas.

And I dont know where you're from but I grew up in a house full of women and 50 dollar shirt is a cheap thing for them. Of course they have good jobs and are very intelligent as well...

Also look up just how much money the president has spent in total on his family and then look up any other president. You'll see that your argument is moot...

and i know how you haters do...don't go to one of your prop sites and try to hold that up for proof...get the official numbers...thats the beauty of the internet...the information is out there if you can think past the crap...

thats why i dont listen to the pundits...i comb through the documents on the sites by organizations who have been keeping track of the real information ever since we started keeping records in America. If you paid attention during American Studies in high school you shouldn't have a problem finding it...

Bush spent 487 days at Camp David. He spent an addiitonal 490 days at his ranch in Texas, making the total 977 days on vacation (32% of his time in office). Obama has only taken 68 days of vacation so far which puts him on pace for 181 days in 8 years, that is less than 20% of what Bush took.

Joe M - How quickly you forget that Bush led us into the biggest depression since the Great Depression. If you're trying to push our current hard times solely off on Obama, by that logic the good times under Bush were solely caused by Clinton.

It doesn't matter where the president vacations. If Bush went to Texas, the security was the biggest part of the cost. The destination is not the problem, it is the amount of security that has to go along with him. President Obama goes to Hawaii for the same reason President Bush went to Texas...family.

I have a good job and am quite intelligent, but I can't afford a $50 tank top that goes underneath clothing. There are many people I know that have good jobs and are quite intelligent but can't afford to indulge in an overpriced cami.

I'm sorry but the average person doesn't spend $50 on an undershirt, there was no need for you to insult concerned parent/citizen the way you did. An attack against them did nothing but make you look like an ignorant prick.

And just because other Presidents took more time for vacations and spent more money doesn't make it right for anyone to do it. How does it look to the American people when the President is all over the place relaxing while the country is in the shape it's in? It doesn't look good, it never has with any of them. Nobody is saying the President isn't entitled to vacation time, it's the amount of time they take that is sickening.

I am NOT a fan of the Obama's, but Mrs. Obama seems to be quite in touch with the people.

Another Vet here! In case you haven't noticed, not many FLOTUSs have had a size 4 physique. Mrs. Obama isn't any different. Maybe you're just noticing because her rear-end has a shape and is not "double-wide". Now, while I don't agree with the elaborate vacations, I think that she make more of an effort than past leadership to wear clothing that many women can afford to wear. That being stated, I shop at any store, boutique or not, to buy my clothing. Many of my choices are driven by whether or not the price fits within my budget. Mrs. Obama can pretty much shop anywhere but, the fact she chooses to shop at Target proves that our American Women with a Target budget can too obtain nice things at affordable prices.

If Obama is a "puppet for the left wing," we're not very good puppeteers.

We want Single Payer Healthcare or Medicare for all. Where is it?

We want NO NDDAA. We've got it.

We want Guantanamo closed. Still open.

          Etc, etc.....

Seems your reality is based on whatever rhetoric you hear over and over. Not real reality at all.

It's also based on fantasies and misconceptions that you already carry around with you.

YOUR puppet masters exploited you and you're a singin' and a dancin' to the music.

They know that there are quite a lot of you bunker-dweller types out there with pent up antipathy against the "lower classes" - just waiting to get permission to spew their bigoted ideals.

Your puppet Masters show you the way to do it.

Just "Claim" that you don't see color, then proceed to trash whatever race you deem beneath you (all the usual suspects).

Your Masters have you doing all the dirty work for them. When they're done, they'll eat YOU.

Yes the figures have changed since the incorporation of affirmative action, but if you are going to make a point then do the math properly, use percentages of the whole and not numbers in general. then calculate them into amount on average. I know that is not the way liberals do it but its more accurate to obtain the percentage not the total. that is if you want to make a solid point with some degree of accuracy, I understand that is not the desired outcome but what is, if you are a liberal you will find a way to manipulate the answer to reflect your feelings. Shaking... To some people $20 per pay check means being able to buy your kid a new pair of shoes for school (or school supplies for that matter), it could mean being able to purchase a prescription for your sick child or yourself so that you can get back to work. A lot of people in this country are poor and $20 IS a big deal.

People, use your brains! Michelle Obama wearing this dress was most likely an advertisement for Jason Wu's collection. People criticize the Obamas for not relating to the public and for having too much money and spending it as if we aren't in a recession, but then when something like this is shown to us we slam them for the exact opposite. I mean seriously, WHO GIVES A S*** if she wears a dress from Target!?!?!??!

As for our president taking elaborate vacations. I would like to think that people could realize it is the most stressful job in the nation so wouldn't you need a vacation!??!?! Air Force One is just ridiculously expensive to fly in the first place so considering all presidents fly it (regardless of where to) the comparison is pretty much pointless.

Now personally the only point I see in making when comparing presidents and their vacations is pointing out that they all take them. They all go to nice places and take their SS with them and the police work overtime in these areas. It is going to cost taxpayers money for this!!! I mean, where is it supposed to come from!? Do you think our president should be vacationing in a super 8? Don't be absurd, our president regardless of who he or she is deserves the luxury.

Obama has spent between 65-100 vacation days away from the white house this term. Bush spent 487 days (during his two terms) at Camp David alone, not including all of the times he spent at his home and on other trips. Our presidents work hard regardless of their policies. Now where you might not agree with the amount of money spent on these vacations just remember that all of our presidents have taken these luxurious and expensive trips at the cost of taxpayers. You should probably keep in mind how many people there are in this country and it's wayyy less than $1 per person per term.

It's one thing to vacation at one's own home, where in the case of a President the Secret Service has a semi-permanent setup and regular places to stay, or at a super-secure site like Camp David (don't EVEN THINK about trying evey to get close to the place), where every vacation is a working vacation, to say the least (even on "days off the President works several hours a day), and very much another to go ON SEPARATE PLANES to Martha's vineyard, Spain, Africa, etc, or to ply from D.C. to NYC for a date (if the Reagans had done this, the media wouldn't be over it yet). As to Hawai'i, I for one will certainly give the President a pass, as it is where he is originally from (sorry, birthers). As for golf, I hope that we will never have a President who has no hobbies. You need distactions from any job, especially that one. As for Michelle's dress, which this is supposdely about, if anybody thinks that she is routinely dressing like that (from Target) or is doing it for any reason other than a campaign strategy of showing how "ordinary" the First Family is (much like Jimmy Carter's sweaters and carrying the infamous empty garmet bag) then you are hopelessly naive.

Hey Rlquall, you're wrong, but at least you sound kind of reasonable in your response unlike the lunatics who are on the extreme right on this vine.

              Hey Joe M-618182:

Wow for what sense you comment made, you do know that most people on welfare are poor black people and they vote as a dem.

What a racist bigot you are. How can you say that most people on welfare are poor and black. One, this statement is completely false, seeming as though the majority of people on welfare are white. Did you know that 66%, yes I did not type that wrong, 66%, of people on welfare, which is described as any government assistance, including food stamps, public housing, and all that stuff, are white. 66% of people on welfare are white. I personally find it disgusting that you, or anyone for that matter, would adopt such a hideous stereotype about a minority. You, as well as people like Newt Gingrich, should all be ashamed of yourselves for spreading this stereotype that all black people are on welfare, and that they are just a bunch of lazy bums who don't want to work. I am elaborating alot because I find this to be the most offensive disgusting post on this whole vine, and you should be disgusted with yourself.

Our first lady is so confident, so comfortable in her own skin, she could wear a sack dress and look gorgeous. This first family reminds me so much of the Kennedys, the beautiful couple, the cute kids, every photo op is a good one for them.

I see no true and realistic comparison between MO and Jackie - a fashion trendsetter she is not. Get over it - she can look very attractive, but most of the time she sticks out (and not in a good way). Do you really think she has the style of Jackie O, Princess Di, Kate Middleton, Carla Bruni, etc???? I do not!

I think she has a style all her own, and I am sort of glad she is not wearing Jackies pillbox hats. Her style reflects the average American woman, she looks good but never over the top. She is not royalty like Di and Kate, so there is no need for pomp.

Perhaps all those who think that Mrs. Brady is the only beauty standard should try to fight their filthy conditioning - just a little.

The First Lady is gorgeous, strong, confident, intelligent committed to exellence.

I don't have to compare her to Jackie O to see that.

But, if you want to go that route, I wouldn't compare Laura Bush, Barbara Bush, Nancy Regan or Betty Ford to Jackie O, either. None of those puff balls can even come close to Michelle Obama.

                Puleeeze!

We all know why you don't think she's attractive or substantive. You have to first admit it to yourselves.

It's the only way to start the growing process.

Sheila--the first lady DOES have a 'style of her own'. However, her continual wearing of little cardigan sweaters is NOT a good one. She is a tall, slim woman in her late 40's, and wearing those makes her look like she shrunk them, couldn't get one with sleeves long enough, or something.

She wears clothes well, and for the most part, I've been very impressed with her sense of style. That said, the cardigans with the too-short sleeves have got to go.

PS--I would imagine that she, like many other FLOTUSes, gets some of her designer wear DONATED to her. She would then, like the previous ones, donate them to museums/charity.

Maybe you should set aside some time and money and go on a little vacation. Can you name one president who did not go on vacation? Its a sad, sad day in America when we can't spring for a vacation for the top position in the country. She is a lot like us, she is a working woman with two kids, she relies on her mom to help out and keep things running smoothly. She has a lot more fame and money (in her own right) than I do, but the basics are the same.

It's refreshing to see how many of you folks have this administration (and Mrs. O) figured out! All I can say is: "Go VOTE." I am sure there is a very good reason why Jason Wu and Target have been heavily promoted, and it isn't about mrs. o being a fashion icon on a budget. I saw a comment to the effect she likely couldn't wait to get those "rags" off. It's true. The entire thing is a farce and some people are gullible enough to believe it. The one comment that made me positively ill compared these two shysters to the Kennedy's. Believe me, there is NO comparison. What we have is an administration that is doing their best to push this country into socialism, a two class society that allows for the very rich and the peon slave labor that they employ. NOTHING in between. If that is what you want, these folks are your ticket.

David, beauty is relative and subjective, so that is nothing more than your own personal opinion of her appearance. I would also add that a person's beauty should not only be about appearance, when you consider what she has done and is doing for our country you ought to show a little respect.

Made in China or Indonesia or South America, definitely not made in the USA. A president's wife when she is pretending to be "one of the people." could at least buy made in the USA. That is unless that is the least of her concerns.

I find it humorous that the people who are using the child labor argument against Michelle Obama would vote for Newt Gingrich in a heartbeat.

                      Lol.

                      Give me a break.

You don't give a rat's arse about child labor issues.

@ pjr1960,...I think mmis is talking about the tone in general. Had she been referring to you specifically,...then she probably would have used the "reply" option. Her comment and your comment were both posted at 9:22 AM making it very unlikely that she even saw your comment before she posted hers.

Well, when the last "repubs" were in office, the first lady had taste, elegance, and knew better than to throw her arm around the Queen of England like they were buds on an afternoon walk. If you ever watch the interview with our POTUS and his wife and Oprah...you will see who wears the pants in that family....Of course, I guess she is what she is...and she can't help it if she has no class in spite of good schools and lots of exposure to culture.

Rather a disgusting attitude from a 'devil dog'.

But I'm skeptical you're the real thing or if you were, I'd imagine you're a certified sh*@#$%^&d.

As much as I disliked GHW Bush and Sect Def Cheney when they paraded in front of my unit during Desert Storm, as much as I disliked the public behavior of B. Clinton during the Lewinsky scandal, and certainly I found GW Bush inadequate to the office in which he served, FLOTUS has always among Marine's with honor been off limits.

I find her dress and demeanor far more consistent and respectful than your display of the Eagle, Globe and Anchor in a news forum discussing the utterly irrelevant topic of Mrs. Obama's shopping habits.

I think it's great that she bought and is wearing a Target dress. What is so wrong with her showing some humanity and identifying with those of us who are on the other side of the White House fence? Republicans very conveniently forget that they, along with the bankers, are the ones who put this country in our current position and left poor Obama holding the bag. The Republicans have publicly stated that they will vote against anything that Obama proposes. To me, that makes THEM the bad guys...they do not care what is good for the American public, as long as the Democrats are blocked. As a 65 year old, caucasian woman let me just say this....Obama all the way in November!!! PS...I was a Republican for many, many years until I finally learned to vote for the candidate, not the party.

I can't believe the comments I read on some articles. I'm saddened by the racist comments about our commander in chief and his family. I get freedom of speech, but freedom of ignorance is something totally different. I live and work in and area where the high percentage of the people are supported by government assistance, and are not of minority descent. The conversations that sometimes take place between the peole at my workplace embarrass me as an American. The ignorance, the obviously under educated or non educated thoughts, it baffles me how these people survive as adults. and I see this same thought process in some of these comments. It's awful that as Americans we still view each other with such discord.. Our President is our president, every person living in America. And we don't have to agree with his decisions, but to attack him because of his color or what you believe his religion may be and that of his wife and children is American ignorance at its finest.. Disgusting...

I'm not sure what Kool aid drinkers means to you, but to me that is a derogatory name for black people. Racist people like you are the scum of not only america, but of the whole world. You really should be ashamed of yourself.

"Kool-aid drinkers" is a refererence to Jim Jones' followers who went with him from San Francisco to Guyana and then all committed suicide by drinking poisioned Kool-aid because he told them to. He wasn't black, and a substansial minority of his followers were not, either. So I think that is a non-racial (but perhaps quite unfortunate in this context) comment about blind followership.

Plenty of evidence that the First Lady is phoney..

                                1. Planting an organic garden and encouraging us to do the same.

                                2. Being a community organizer.

                                3. Wearing both designer gowns and off-the-rack, inexpensive clothes and dressing her daughters the same.

                                4. Exercising and trying to motivate the country to eat healthier and be physically active as well.

                                5. Foregoing the stiff, rigid rules when meeting the Queen of England and giving her a big, old hug instead.

                                6. Meeting with young people (especially girls) and trying to inspire them to study hard and give back to society.

                                7. Holding her head up with dignity and grace in the face of ugly racism and dispicable Supremacy, and showing her daughters what a role model looks like.

Yup. Plenty of evidence she's a "phoney."

No evidence that Ron Paul, Newt Gingrich or Rick Santorum are racists and White Male Supremacists, though....Nope....not a stitch.

                                It's just our imagination..

                                Have a nice day, y'all :)

you DO realize one does not have to be white to be racist now, dont you? havent you ever heard the things Mrs. Obama had to say BEFORE the taxpayers paid her rent?

You DO realize that claiming that some black people can be racist doesn't cancel out the overwhelming racism coming from the right with regards to the Obamas and the left, don't you?

Haven't you heard what all of your candidates said before and during their campaigns to have the taxpayers pay their rent?

What color do you have to be to be a White Supremacist?

                                Have a nice day.

Next time, go get your big brother to answer my posts.

Oh, and YES, I've heard the things Michelle Obama has said - pretty much all of them. If she offended supremacists, she was doing the right thing. Only the imagination of a conservative could spin any of it into racism.

These ARE people who think she's unattractive and spending Millions of taxpayer dollars for exorbitant vacations.

Not folks who deal in reality.

Again, have a nice day, hear?

I still can't believe that Ron Paul had a flat out racist newletter published in his name, then he turned around and voted against making MLK day a national holiday, then he turned around and said that MLK and him were the best of buds. WOW!!

Mrs. Obama is an elegant, classy woman who has a really classy sense of style. The racism and bigotry in many of the posts are truly disheartening. She has worked tirelessly to promote good health in our children and to increase the attention paid to our military families. Both of those causes were in need of attention and she saw that need and made it happen. The Obama family represents the US with class and style whenever they are seen. American citizens should be proud of them and not looking at them with cynical, bigoted eyes. I support President Obama now and for a second term and I thank the First Lady for her tireless devotion to her country.

Nice post Linda. Shameful to see so many who profess Christian Family values, but express nothing but hate and negativity as if this is supposed to convert people to the GOP Evangelical Christian way....they are only evangelizing hate and judgment (modern day Pharisees).

The First Family as loving husband & wife, parents, beautiful daughters, leaders and successful personal lives have shown more Christian family values than any of the GOP leaders and posters on this page. GOP Evangelical witness has moved so far from the teachings and love of Christ (love your enemies, neighbors, love is patient, kind, etc...)

God Bless our Country, our First Family and Our Military. God's love is big enough to cover us all.

Right here at this time and place, we are not talking about what kind of president he is or isn't, what kind of good person she is or isn't, what they have or haven't done to destroy/restore this country. There will be no coming together on those issues. What we're discussing is the picture and the dress and the fact that this made any kind of a headline...at all. What I would like to see would be her in that exact pose sporting that dress at one of her ($30,000+ plate) Hollywood mansion functions or the ($14 or was it $16 per) muffin host breakfasts. How both of them can "play" to whichever crowd best suits them is remarkable. The very saddest part is the fools they make of the people giving them a pass for this behavior.

                                    Hey Neal in Denver:

Linda - take off the tin hat, put down the Kool-Aid and see her for what she is, a snob trying to look human and failing. Please note: no racism or bigotry here, just obvious truth.

Yeah Neal. No racism whatsoever. You're just telling a person you have never met before, who you assume is black, to put down the kool aid that he/she must obviously be drinking because that person is black. You are also simply trying to tell her that the racist comments that have been made are just truths. Yep, no racism whatsoever.

And another thing, I am so sick and tired of the GOP and their zombie followers saying what devout christians they are. They remind me of the pharisees. For those of you GOP who profess to be christians, but don't know anything about the bible, yet are well versed in hate, the pharisees were the religious leaders of the days when Jesus was on earth in the flesh. The mocked Jesus, and tried to do ill things against him because he pointed out what hypocrites they were. They were the same people who did every sin you could possibly imagine, yet they judged other people unworthy of enering heaven. They claimed they were the religious leaders of the day. When Jesus was getting tried for being a false prophet, they stood outside shouting CRUCIFY HIM, yet they couldn't come inside the court because they were too Holy. The GOP reminds me exactly of them, and it makes me kind of angry.

Remember that photo of Michelle pushing a shopping cart as she was leaving Target? (I'm thinking the cart was empty.) And there just HAPPENED to be a Reuters photographer right there to snap a photo.....IN TARGET!!! Go ahead and believe this nonsense all you want - I'm smarter than that.

Target Corp. is not a French-owned company, contrary to the assertion by a previous poster. It was founded in 1902 and is headquartered in Minneapolis. It is strictly a U.S. merchandiser.

Dave Lacks. That about says it all.

Let's see, was it the "Read my lips", one term Bush or his inept, embarrassing son who was shooed back to Crawford?

If you know so much about TARGET being non-French then you might try to file a injury claim in Federal Court...your lie comes right out when the COC tells you that TARGET is under French jurisdiction, and have a team of United States lawyers handling US claims. Try telling another lie about TARGET, but get your facts straight. The Minn. is a Corporate office.

Target was originally a subsidiary of Dayton-Hudson Corporation, a holding company that owned two major chains of regional department stores, (unsurprisingly) Dayton's and Hudson's. When the number of Target stores vastly exceeded the number of Dayton's and Hudson's combined, managment proposed (and the shareholders agreed) to change the name to Target Corp. Your reference to the Court of Claims as the COC had thousands of members of the Churches of Christ shaking their heads, no doubt, and reveals you as a pseudosophisticate showing off how much you don't know. Even if Target were a French corp., the U.S. subidiary would be functioning under U.S. law, just as the French subsidiaries of U.S. companies must function under French law in France.

Yeah not the one who preceded him who drove us into the worst economic collapse since the great depression. Heck, not even the republcian one who drove us into the great depression. NO, this one. This one is especially bad. Can you see how his wife tries to encourage us eat fruits and vegetables, or even how he tries to raise taxes on the job creators(a.k.a., rich people who most likely wouldn't even notice the extra few dollars coming out of their pay). This president is especially bad.
