The polka dot may be considered a classic print, but its striking effect can be intimidating to some. TODAY style editor and Bobbie.com's Bobbie Thomas shares tips for pulling off the spotty style at any age.
While the pattern dates back to mid 19th century Britain, fashion icons have been sporting the style ever since and everyone from Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe to Princess Diana and Michelle Obama. Trying the whimsical trend is easy, just keep a few of these basic techniques in mind...
Since dots can be dainty and feminine, consider keeping the silhouette ladylike as well, and pair with an A-Line skirt or dress or a traditional, top handle bag. For a slightly more modern look, try pairing polka dots together. Pay attention to scale and wear a small print with one that is significantly larger, or, wear inverse color schemes of two similarly sized circles. You can play up the fanciful side of spots by slipping into a fun pant or printed pair of pantyhose.

And don't be afraid to be bold! The classic black and white combo also plays well with pops of bright color, so try a red lip, pink shoe, or yellow belt- to name just a few ideas. You can instantly update a basic ensemble with a chic polka dot scarf, or even a manicure.
