Pull-on jeans? Not just for grandma anymore

Bloomingdale's

Old-school pull-on jeans were so not cute, but Sold's skinny jeans, are chic, slimming and affordable. ($78.40, bloomingdales.com)

By Kristin Kalning

Pull-on jeans sound like something your grandma – or your toddler – might wear. But zipper-less denim is trendier than ever – and most pairs are less than $100.

Sold Design Denim Labs pioneered the movement, making sleek and substantial denim that lacks a zipper, but boasts a functional button. They have a ton of stretch, so they’re a snap to pull on. And they come in a variety of leg styles, from bell-bottom to skinny and bootcut.

You’ll find Sold at stores such as Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman and Bloomingdale’s, all for $118 and under. The Bowery Bootcut Medium Wash style is just $58 at Neiman Marcus.

Miraclebody, from the folks that brought you the Miraclesuit, offers jeans with a “hand-crafted miracle panel” to suck in your gut – but the real miracle is that they look fashionable, not frumpy. Reviewer Kathy T from Atlanta loved that the fabric on her denim leggings ($68) wasn’t too thin (a common complaint about jeggings). And if skinny’s not your thing, the Stevie bootcut ($90) offers a sleek silhouette with a looser leg; all are available at Zappos.

Kristin Kalning writes about parenting, health and fashion from her home in suburban Seattle. She is still searching for the perfect pair of jeans.

No, these are hopefully better than jamma jeans. I bought a pair of jamma jeans and they were the most ill fitting things ever!. They are too short seated and had the this verrrrry lose waist band. I am not supper slim and don't have a tiny waist. Those jean's waist stood out from my body so far you could look right down your pants! I put two fists in the waist band and had room for another pair of fists. They fit correct right below the waist, so I don't know why that wide waistband was there. They were also very long on me. Which is not too unusual. Don't waste your money unless you have a very strange shape! lol I am 5'1 and weigh 120 lbs. I carry my weight in my trunk and shoulders, and have thin legs, so they should have fit. If I get another pair I will try the clearance rack at a high dollar stores.

I prefer to drop the zipper and let it hang out instead of dropping the drawers to pee.

But obviously this is a "girl" thing.

$100? I have a sewing machine, and I know how to use it!

But how will I zip up my fupa?

I love how I am always told something is affordable. 78.40 for a pair of jeans is not "affordable" when I can go to a lower end retail store (jc pennys, kohls etc..) and find jeans on sale for 20.00. Yeah, you have to dig around a little, but i will take the extra 10 minutes to save over 50.00 Guess I might have to resort to the age old zipper, but I will muster through some how.

I can't believe people spend $100+ for jeans. I won't spend over $20 for a pair. To me, all jeans are created equal anyway, so why pay so much?

I will pay more for jeans that fit me well (love the Levi's "bold curve" line), but we're talking in the $45-$60 range, not $100. It's hard to find jeans that fit me in the hips without gapping at the waist, so when I find something that works without needing a belt, that's worth spending a bit more on.

Given this appears to be a TODAY show offshoot, I conclude that New Yorkers think $100 jeans are a bargain. And they wonder why the rest of us scratch our heads. And where else can one omit a piece of hardware (a zipper) and the product is more expensive....which gives me an idea. How about I go to the car dealer and say "add a GPS and heating coils on the seats to that car and maybe I can afford it."

I think they normally pay $100.00 or more with or without the zipper! Not me, that is ridiculous!

I am wearing a similar pair today, think I might have paid $15 for them, more likely $10. These articles always brag about how you can get a piece of clothing for the price I would pay for 3 outfits.

I am so happy to see folks on here talking about where things are made! If we made our own stuff we could put people back to work! I always look and if I find MADE IN THE USA that's what I buy. If we could get every one on board, we could solve the jobs problem!

They're called fat pants or stretch pants.

Renaming them and charging $100 a pair is a stunt that only the truly stupid (or 'trendy' or 'fashion conscious') shoppers will fall for.

No, skinny jeans are something different from "jeggings". Skinny jeans are just regular denim cut very slim all the way to the ankle rather than flaring out like boot cut or being all baggy through the seat like comfort-fit.

            If they're lycra-stretchy with no zipper, they're not jeans - they're jeggings.

Both of my pairs of maternity jeans are pull-on and skinny-legged (usually I wear flares) and people say they look cute. I do like not having to mess with the zipper but the price in this article is still a little steep for me.

Me too. I am way over child bearing age but I found a pair if maternity jeans and I love them! They fit in all the right places. I have thin legs and these jeans do too. I get lots of compliments! They have some elastic on the sides with a tab and two buttons for adjustments.

These are either too hard to get on or they sag. I can't see how you could get jeans on past your hips without them just coming back down again. No thank you.

Buy Diane Gilman DG2 jeans. Price is great and the fit is awesome. Many styles and colors to choose from. They are not grandma jeans. They don't bag or sag and they stay put.
