You may know it as Veteran’s Day, but November 11th has a different, more celebratory holiday associated with it: for the past few years, it’s been celebrated as Corduroy Appreciation Day. Why November 11th? Corduroy enthusiasts (of which there are many) claim that 11/11 is the date which most resembles the lines of corduroy fabric. As this year is 11/11/11, fans of the textile are planning an especially big celebration.
Lily Pad, a popular performance space in Cambridge, Mass, is offering a discount to anyone who wears the fabric. A corduroy Tweet-Up is happening in Frederick, Maryland, where corduroy aficionados have been instructed to don their favorite cords and meet up for “coffee and camraderie”. In Chicago, the inaugural Chicagoland Corduroy Appreciation Ball will take place, and in Fromberg, Montana, enthusiasts will be celebrating with music and, (you guessed it) corduroy. And in Washington DC, those wishing to pay their respects to the ‘fabric of kings’ can head to Room 11 on 11th Street to meet with like-minded fabric enthusiasts.
But the biggest celebration of all -- and it’s probably safe to say, the biggest celebration of corduroy ever -- will take place in New York City for the Annual Grand 111111 Meeting. The sold-out event, hosted by the Corduroy Appreciation Club, is the culmination of six years of fabric near-worship. The club was founded by Miles Rohan as a tongue-in-cheek homage to secret societies, but has now grown into a semi-serious group, with chapters across the country.
The 11/11/11 event is scheduled to be “probably, likely the last” such celebration, but the cord-lovers are going out with a bang. Guests will only be admitted if they adhere to what the club calls The Three Item Rule: that is, attendees must be wearing three separate items of corduroy. The event will feature an 11 person band, an Award Ceremony for Exemplary Uses of Corduroy, a keynote address, and, most startlingly, the presentation of the Corduroy Messiah -- that is, a yet-to-be-found kid who turns 11 on that day. And then, promptly at 11:11 pm, it will be all over -- at least, until 100 years from now, when the next 11/11/11 comes around.

I beg to differ with "the cords." November 11 will aways be Veteran's Day or for some of you old enough to remember when it was called Armistice Day. It's a day to honor and remember those veterans past and present who fought for you and your right to celebrate the invention of "cords." Most WW II, Korean, and Vietnam vets are aging or dying as you read this. Please remember them and all veterans who have gone before them. Our current group of returning vets from the past decade needs your support as well.
Remember them. Honor them. Pray for them. Widow of Vietnam Veteran.
Not mine. I have zero respect for a military that humiliates my country before the entire world and gives aid and support to our enemies.
WTF? Explain that one to us.
You should have zero respect for yourself. Ignorance is bliss, eh?
The allegations you make should be directed at the civilian leaders of the military, not the men and women of the our military, nearly all of whom serve selflessly and with honor.
Wow. And they die to protect you.
Anything for a buck
I will turn 43 tomorrow on 11/11/11 and this is the first time I have EVER heard of courderoy day. I have always been proud to share "my day" in honor of Veterans in this country. I think that in honor of those veterans we need to air drop Seriouslynow into the heart of Afganistan.
Hey, it's great to hear of people getting together and having fun that isn't commercialized. I think Corduroy groups are a great idea.
Too bad someone has to try to spoil the fun by reminding us that it is ALSO Veterans' Day. My father is a vet and I respect his war experience and my uncle was killed in Viet Nam as a Green Beret Medic and I still wish he had lived. But this doesn't mean that I can't see the benefit of a grassroots "movement" that spreads innocent happiness and fun among people such as Corduroy Day.
Too bad that spoilers can't understand that more than one thing can go on at once and both be good.
agreed. The day belongs to veterans and Veterans Day, but it can also be corduroy day since apparently its the perfect date for it because the 1's look like corduroy (is that the reason?),lol
veterans day should be renamed corporate fighters day where we celebrate soldiers marines and sailors and airmen who fight for coca cola, halliburton, exxonmobil, walmart, and other corporations to keep their profits up. bush has a hard-on for war and i do too now, right after i learned how to profit off death and war.
